Marzo-Mars-Março-March 2021

Escutemos as mulheres!

On March 8th, 2021, Quebec celebrated with the theme: Listen to the women.  The pandemic has highlighted the need to adopt measure to attain sustainable equality.  It is in these historic times that we demand to “listen to the women”, and that we be the protagonists in this long awaited change.
The Covid-19 pandemic has a negative impact on women and exacerbates the structural and systemic inequalities caused by patriarchy, classism, racism, and colonialism.  In the front lines of health services, social services, and education, which form the majority of jobs considered essential, it is women, and particularly women of color and their families and communities who are being most exposed to the virus.  Paradoxically, it is also women who have been most affected by the rise in unemployment and the loss of income.  Many women have left the job market, while those who telework have seen a rollback of their gains in terms of work-life balance.  Women who are confined and victims to domestic violence have difficulty accessing help and housing services, while the needs are only growing.
Sexism, racism, ageism, heteronormativity, ablism, and many other forms of systemic discrimination have intensified during these months of the pandemic, exposing deep inequities in our society.  Women who are at the intersection of multiple forms of oppression are the most affected by violence, including indigenous women, women of color, trans and non-binary women, women with disabilities, or sexually nonconforming women.
In this context of crisis and discrimination, women and feminist organizations in Quebec have denounced the injustice and demanded structural and systemic changes that are more needed now than ever.  Nonetheless, the decades old calls to defend women’s rights go unheard, and the pandemic has laid bare the fragility and precariousness of the progress so far.
The pandemic has highlighted the need to adopt measure to attain sustainable equality.  It is in these historic times that we demand to “listen to the women”, and that we be the protagonists in this long awaited change.
The slogan “Listen to the women” aims to illustrate this fact: women want concrete measures to end the poverty and violence that they are suffering, with the goal of considerably improving their living and working conditions.
The accompanying visual depicts women in all their diversity to represent the plurality of their realities and of the feminist struggles for liberation.  It is through solidarity and collective, intersectional, action, that we can aspire to a deep transformation of society.  The goal is for every woman to see this illustration and see herself,  know that her voice counts, that there is awareness of her reality, and that she will be heard!
With this slogan, we have taken a simple but transformative action.  If we listened to women instead of ignoring them, undervaluing their work, and underpaying them; if we included them in places of decision making, we would be in a completely new world.
A world where erradicating poverty and violence, and where climate justice are social and governmental priorities.  A world where finally all women are given equal treatment.  We have been imagining this world for a long time, now it is time to make it a reality.

The World March of Women in Quebec
CQMMF

The groups that form the Quebec Coordination of the World March of Women (known by its French acronym, CQMMF) insisted on making the voices of women heard, and organized activities despite the pandemic: demonstrations, webinars, publications, community radio programs, etc.

Women from different organizations and backgrounds share the certainty that the struggle for liberation is essencial to make women’s rights respects.
Thus, from across Quebec the World March of Women declares, “We want a world where climate justice and the eradication of poverty and violence become social and governmental priorities.  We want a world where all women- migrants, immigrants, and indigenous will finally be treated as equals.  This world that we have imagined for so long, let’s make it a reality now!”
