The Virus of Capitalism

Carmen Díaz
MMM México
The current pandemic and need for social isolation reveal how the essential jobs for life, care-work (paid or unpaid), and the production of food are performed by women, who have low wages and who, often, enjoy no rights, at the community level, with relationships of cooperation and solidarity, in agricultural and agro-ecological production [sic].
The greed of big companies puts in danger people’s lives. For capital, profit is what is essential. For capitalism, our health and our lives don’t matter. Many companies do not guarantee the minimum necessary to be able to prevent the [virus] transmission, or even paid sick leave to workers who are ill; and they do not take into consideration concrete changes in the daily life that increase the need for domestic and care-work, especially for women.
The extreme right forced that are in power reinforce authoritarianism and violence. The imperialist blockades and economic sanctions generate more obstacles for countries to be able to confront this pandemic. The coronavirus crisis has shown the impacts of social and economic inequalities in people’s lives; but this reality was already present in the world. Transnational corporations concentrate, every time even more, wealth and power on their hands; they destroy nature, exert violence, and evict people from their own territories.
As the World March or Women, in the 24 hours of solidarity against transnational corporations, we resist the commodification of health, and we march to put life at the center of public policies. We resist agribusinesses, and march for food sovereignty. We resist the hoarding and pollution of territories, and march for the right to water. We resist surveillance, and we march for free and safe technologies. We resist the free market, and we march for the integration of peoples. We resist the commodification of feminism, and we march until we are all free. We march to transform society!
It is urgent to make visible the alternatives that we are already building in our neighborhoods, schools, fields, streets, and networks. In the construction of the solidarity economy, agro-ecology, food sovereignty, popular communication, we need an organized movement formed by women who sustain the economy and who, precisely because of this, need to radically transform it. Our feminist alternatives are a way to present, through concrete practices, the possibilities for transformation. Our alternatives work to change the world, and the life of women within the same movement.
On April 24th, we remember the death of more than one thousand women working for transnational corporations in the garment industry in Rana Plaza. In the 24 hours of Feminist Solidarity against the power of transnational corporations, we connect globally through our denunciations, our alternatives, and our strength as self-organized women who march until we are all free.
