Strengthening alliances in communication

In the days previous to the Anti-imperialist Encounter of Solidarity with Democracy and Against Neoliberalism, Alejandra Laprea of the national coordinating chapter in Venezuela went, on behalf of the World March of Women, to a meeting for strengthening links and the reflection on the communication needed to do collaborative work and to support continental struggles.
This meeting had militants from the Red de Intelectuales Cuba, Centro Martín Luther King, Red Ambientalista del Salvador, Federación de Mujeres de Cuba, Casa Las Américas, Alba Movimientos, Red de Jubileo Sur America, and WWM The Americas. This meeting began with a reading of the continental context from the perspective of popular political communication, and continued with reflections on the counterhegemonic character of the communication needed. Other points in the agenda were the collective construction of a front of popular communication from the Jornadas Antimperialistas, and the elaboration of a plan for collective coverage of the Anti-imperialist Encounter to come.
Censorship and the attacks to which alternative and popular media are subjected in many countries were some of the most highlighted characteristics during the reading of the context, as well as the media’s responsibility as reproducer and keeper of a communication and culture that have heteronormative, patriarchal, racial, and classist features.
This meeting had a space for sharing knowledge about social networks, and for bringing organizations to free platforms such as mastodon.social,  cubava.cu, signas.org. These networks guarantee the confidentiality of communication and the non-commodification of data and the life of users.
In the reflections was noted that while the alternative social networks in free platforms don’t have the power of influence, they are alternatives for organizations because of their security.
Another conclusion of the meeting was that we should not abandon the most traditional techniques of popular communication. Theater, community wall news, murals…are all communication techniques and methods that have proven their efficiency in political communication over time.
